前言:
Taiwan has budgeted NT$86.4 billion (US$2.6 billion) for the development of the domestic healthcare industry on the expectation of strong demand from both local people and visitors from abroad.
The four-year program is aimed at boosting industry revenue by NT$346.4 billion and adding 310,000 jobs by 2012. Taiwan’s internationally acclaimed healthcare system provides easy access to medical treatment with costs that are relatively low compared to Europe, America and Japan.
Moreover, Taiwan seeks to attract foreign investment in the domestic healthcare industry to help meet demand that is expected to grow rapidly as more people from China and around the world visit the island for medical treatment. The dramatically improved ties between Taiwan and China in the past year have resulted in the first medical tourism groups from China arriving in June this year.
Taiwan’s strength in the information and communications technology field is also likely to provide an advantage in the healthcare field. Taiwan’s medical care services are expected to overcome the restrictions of time and place through the use of information technology to accelerate diagnostics and promote telecare.
“The foundation for intelligent medicine has been established in Taiwan,” said Dr. Tzay-Jinn Chen, Deputy Minister of the Department of Health, Executive Yuan.
Dr. Chen indicates that around the world, as aging populations and declining birthrates have become inevitable trends, healthcare investment should focus equally on medical treatment and preventive medicine.
As Taiwan opens its door to growing numbers of visitors from abroad, the investment opportunities in the healthcare industry are brimming with potential. Interested investors are cordially invited to join the 2009 Taiwan Business Alliance Conference to receive more information and to build bonds with the industry.
The hosts of the conference’s session on investment opportunities in healthcare are Tzay-Jinn Chen, Deputy Minister of the Department of Health, and Steve Hsu-Sung Kuo, Director of the Centers for Disease Control, Department of Health.
The panel discussion led by the two speakers will introduce two subtopics: Investment Opportunities in Taiwan’s e-Healthcare; and Business Opportunities in Taiwan’s Fast Growing Health Security Sector.
Intelligent healthcare includes areas such as digitalization of medical records, the adoption of information technology in healthcare and long-distance healthcare.
Health Security, which comes under the second subtopic, includes such areas as vaccine development for diseases like influenza and enterovirus.
Every year, the number of outpatients with enterovirus infection in Taiwan reaches a peak around mid-June, and enterovirus 71 often causes severe complications and even fatalities among children. Since 2001, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) have been engaged in the development of an enterovirus vaccine. Taiwan CDC has already established the technology for large-scale production and expects enter clinical trials for the vaccine in about three years.
As the speakers share their experience on investment and business models together with their views on the development of Taiwan's healthcare industry, interested foreign investors should be able to identify business opportunities that may to attract them to invest in Taiwan.
