Because of the demands from mobile phone vendors, chipmakers kept delivering all kinds of multimedia enhancement solutions, made 'Mobile Entertainment' a great phenomenon. On the other hand, the success of BlackBerry and those kinds of devices with QWERT keyboard had shown that the business market DO needs this kind of products, and the potential of the mobile phones as the core of mobile office.

Following this trend, Texas Instruments announced its future product--OMAP3 application processor during the 3GSM show. According to TI, OMAP3 will be an application processor that designed for both business and entertainment applications, and enabling the "Work Hard, Play Hard" life style for mobile phone users.
集工作與娛樂於一身的訴求將怎樣影響整個手機產業呢？在與Giles Delfassy的訪談中，他分享了他對於手機產業未來發展方向的觀察。

從行動通訊向消費市場，不再只是高階商務人士的專屬配備那刻起，手機的多媒體功能就一直是手機製造商的行銷訴求，以及上游半導體廠商投入資源研發的重點項目。「在行動通訊進入3G時代之後，手機仍然是個人隨身的娛樂中心。」Giles Delfassy說。「而且這個趨勢不會改變，因為隨著半導體製程技術的演進，以及通訊頻寬的迅速增加，不僅處理器的多媒體效能將持續提昇，服務或系統營運商也有更多資源可以將多媒體內容傳送到消費者手上，例如影像電話、短片下載等等。這兩者是相輔相成的。」
Multimedia had been taken as a marketing feature for cellular phones vendors, and also where the R&D capital of semiconductor vendors spent, since the day that mobile phones are not just devices for business users but also consumers. "Mobile phones will be a personal entertainment center that we can carry with us all the time in the coming 3G era" said Giles Delfassy. "This trend won't be changed. With the improvement of process technologies, processors will be more capable to handle those multimedia contents. From operators' standing point, the increasing of communication bandwidth means they could deliver more multimedia rich contents and services to their subscribers, like video phony, movie clip downloading, etc."
不過，除了作為玩樂工具之外，效能越來越高的手機多媒體處理器，其實也讓手機具備了整合更多功能的能力，例如具備QWERT鍵盤，可以用來收發E-Mail、文書編輯等等事務用途的新型態手機，目前正在歐美市場上大行其道。這次編輯在巴塞隆納參觀3GSM展時，除了展覽會場上BlackBerry、iMate等以E-Mail Communicator產品一炮而紅的供應商理所當然地展出了最新款的產品之外，其實當地只要是稍具規模的電子賣場或通訊行等零售通路，也都可以看得到這類型的手機在展示櫃中陳列。
With the more capable multimedia processors that are coming in the near future, mobile phones can be an even more powerful tools, but not just a toy. For Example, those new types of handheld devices with QWERT keyboard and being able to do E-Mail checking, document editing, etc. are really popular in US and Europe market. During the 3GSM in Barcelona this year, only several major vendors that are well-known in E-Mail Communicator market like RIM (the company that created BlackBerry), iMate, and so on had certainly showed its own latest products. But actually, it's not just a showcase in the trade show, consumers can easily find those type of devices on the shelf in local retailers.

"With the processors getting more and more capable, mobile phones in the future will not just being a device that featuring fancy multimedia functions, but also a portable business machine. Users can edit documents, writing E-Mail, changing the slice that will be used for the next presentation, etc. After those works are done, users can even hook their mobile phones to the printer for printing by Bluetooth or WLAN, or even just connect their phones to the projector to do a presentation. Traditionally, those kinds of job were being done on a notebook PC, but mobile phones can be used to do that soon." Giles Delfassy said.

"We can't live a modern live without mobile phones" Delfassy said. "Today, people can use mobiles to communicate with the others, taking pictures, listening to musics, or play games. That means we rely on the mobiles more and more. I believe, the mobiles with be a core device in our modern living style soon, and that's why TI enhanced not only multimedia performance but also the capabilities for business applications in OMAP3 architecture. We had seen the trend that mobiles will completely influent our live. "

「不過，這並不表示我們認為手機會完全取代其他現有的電子裝置。事實上，手機從來也沒有完全取代其他電子產品。像是PDA、數位相機等電子產品，雖然手機已經具備這些裝置的功能，但是這兩項電子產品的市場規模依然相當可觀。在OMAP3推出之後，客戶雖然可以利用OMAP3的事務應用處理能力設計出具備部分筆記型電腦功能的手機，但我們並不認為手機因此就會對筆記型電腦造成威脅，因為筆記型電腦的效能也在不停演進，同時開創新應用。」Giles Delfassy強調。
"But! That does not mean we had seen a future that mobile phones will replace all of those devices that we are using today. A lot of people like to take the PDAs and Digital Still Cameras for examples to argue that mobiles do replace some certain part of their market, but the reality is, the market size of those two devices is still big, even mobiles had integrated some of their functions. With our OMAP3 multimedia processors, our customers can use its capability to run business applications on their system, but we don't think that mobiles is going to replace the notebook PCs. The performance of PC processors is increasing too, and enabling more and more new applications. "

Right after the product announcement of OMAP3, some analysts believe that OMAP3 could be as capable as Intel Pentium III but still meet the power requirements of mobile phone industry. Delfassy's said, "From the performance perspective, OMAP3's performance may be as capable as PIII, but OMAP3 is not designed for PCs. Just like what I said before, the performance of PC processors is increasing, and the market will need both of them. Just like mobiles didn't replace DSCs or PDAs, consumers will made their choice."

About 7 years ago, I was discussing with my parents that I want my first mobile phone. My parents just returned me another question, " Are you running any business?" Today, almost all of those kids who live in my neighborhood have their own mobiles. Multimedia features had tuned the mobile phone industry a extremely huge industry. According to a lot of forecasts, the mobile phone shipment will exceed 1 billion this or next year.

But the future of the mobile phones may not keep emphasizing on multimedia capabilities only.
